Janet Elizabeth McCartney

of Houston, Texas passed away September 9, 2013 at Memorial Hermann Hospice. Janet was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ellura and Hugh McCartney. She graduated from Janesville High School.
During World War II, she attended classes at University of Wisconsin – Madison and worked at Ray-O-Vac. Soon after V-E Day, she and a friend signed up for a tour of duty with the US Overseas Liquidation Agency and served two years in Rome, Italy. Upon returning to Wisconsin, she joined her two cousins and three friends in a two car caravan that drove from Madison, Wisconsin to Santiago, Chile on the Pan American Highway a trip that required a year to complete.
She returned to Janesville, Wisconsin and with her cousin and started several businesses including a pie shop and a turkey farm. Janet and her cousin, Marietta Pickens, moved to Houston and became permanent residents.
Janet worked for Marvin Leggett for many years before his untimely death and, thereafter for Leggett Properties. Janet developed many loving friends throughout her work life with the Leggett Group.
Janet was admired for her organizational and leadership skills. She was an independent spirit and had an active interest in football, basketball, golf and her pets. Her interest in current events and politics was amazing.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, and many wonderful, loving and caring friends, and one sister-in-law, Francine Case. Janet is preceded in death by her housemates, Marietta Pickens (cousin) and Ann Boone and four brothers, Lyle, Robert, Richard, and David. Janet had a wonderful team of caregivers that loved her dearly.
Graveside Service will be held Friday, September 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Emerald Grove Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to The Emerald Grove Cemetery Association.
